Explain the plan in advance and let each child choose a wave, a greeting or watching from a caregiver's side.
Try a brief story or movement game, then offer photo turns so children can participate at their own pace.

In Wasola, help children anticipate the character visit with a simple explanation: the guest will say hello, join a short activity and pose for photos if children want. A child who prefers a quiet greeting can stand near a parent or watch first. Keep the activity short and give guests turns rather than inviting everyone forward at once. If you are considering an enclosed state park room or shelter, check reservation conditions and permission for the planned visit. Ask us to confirm program details and availability.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
Missouri State Parks says enclosed shelters, venues and meeting rooms require advance reservations. Check the exact facility type and current booking conditions, since open picnic shelters can follow a different process. Confirm the gathering layout and permission for a hired character visit with the operator; this policy does not establish entertainer availability.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
