Let the child watch from beside a trusted adult, wave from a distance or join later. Avoid making a greeting or photo a requirement.
Choose a clear spot and invite children forward in small groups. Keep the birthday child's preferred place in mind, including beside a parent.
Ask about the visit plan, timing, cost and availability. A requested ZIP code or date is not a reservation or payment.
For an Eagle Harbor, Maryland, character visit, plan around the child's comfort first: a familiar adult can introduce the guest, then let the birthday child choose a wave, a short conversation or a little space. Keep the visit in one easy-to-find area so children can join in without interrupting play. Before choosing a site, confirm its capacity, setup time and permission for hired entertainment directly with the operator. Maryland-specific venue details have not been verified here, so treat the following as statewide planning checks and parent suggestions, not confirmed city facilities or policies.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
As a city-scoped example within Maryland, Baltimore city recreation centers provide room rental information. Baltimore directs families to their recreation center for room rental information. Check the actual room capacity, permitted entertainment and setup time rather than assuming any recreation center can host the same program. This example applies only to Baltimore's listed municipal facilities; other cities and state-managed parks have separate operators and rules. Confirm the exact venue's reservation process and permission for hired entertainment.

National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
