In Bruce, South Dakota, consider making the indoor transition part of the plan from the start, rather than deciding where to go during changing weather. A designated adult can monitor conditions while the host helps the birthday child greet the character at their own pace. Keep guest participation optional and prepare one convenient spot for pictures. These are statewide planning checks, not verified local venue rules. Ask us to confirm theme, program details, costs, and availability before sharing firm expectations with guests.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.

National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue.
