Offer watching, waving or joining an activity as equal choices. Let each child decide when, or whether, to approach.
Choose the photo spot ahead of time and keep the line informal. Ask the character service what photo opportunities the requested program allows.

For Cedar Crest, New Mexico, give the character visit a simple shape: a friendly entrance, a moment for photos and one optional way for children to participate. A child can greet the character, wave from a parent's side or watch until ready. If a state park shelter is part of the plan, check the specific park's current information rather than assuming facilities have the same conditions. These are statewide planning checks and parent suggestions, not verified Cedar Crest venues or policies.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
New Mexico State Parks directs visitors to specific park pages for group shelter reservations. Review the chosen facility's current conditions, operating information and alerts rather than applying one set of amenities to every park. Ask the operator about your gathering and hired entertainment before committing to the location.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
