Let them observe first, then choose a wave, photo from beside a trusted adult or brief greeting. Participation can remain optional.
Choose a clear arrival point, tell the character team the child's name and any greeting preferences, and leave space for photos.
No. A request is not a reservation or payment. Confirm availability, program details and costs with our team.
For a Fort Shafter celebration, plan the character visit around one calm highlight: a warm hello, a short story or game, then a photo moment for the birthday child. Let children watch before joining, and offer a wave or high-five as alternatives to a hug. Keep the gathering area clear so guests can take turns without crowding. These are parent planning ideas, not a promised program; ask us about the requested character, and confirm program details, costs and availability with our team.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
Hawaiʻi State Parks publishes a reservation and purchase process for pavilion permits alongside camping and lodging permits. The booking window and conditions can differ by island and facility, so check the exact pavilion and dates. Describe hired entertainment to the park operator and confirm whether additional permission is needed; this is not guidance for every beach or private venue.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
