Let the child stay beside a trusted adult and choose a wave, distant photo, or no interaction. There is no need to rush.
Choose an adult before the gathering and make sure that person knows the indoor backup route.
No. The listed advice is statewide and national planning guidance, not confirmation of Harrisburg venues or policies.
In Harrisburg, South Dakota, give the birthday child a low-pressure first moment before turning the visit into a group activity. A familiar adult can stay close while the child chooses to wave, say hello, or simply watch. Then offer guests a turn to join a photo or share a brief greeting. Beforehand, tell the character team the child's preferred name, sensitivities, guest count, and party location. Ask us to confirm program ideas, costs, and availability rather than assuming a particular activity is included.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
Official source (opens in a new tab)Choose an adult to monitor the forecast and decide when to move the group indoors. National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue. This does not establish local permits, shelter reservations or entertainer availability.
