The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, known locally as H.A.R.D., is an independent special use district that provides park and recreation services for more than 275,000 residents of Hayward and nearby unincorporated communities.

Most H.A.R.D. parks have picnic sites that are free to the public and available first come, first served, so an outdoor party depends on what is open that day. Indoor rooms work differently. Eleven H.A.R.D. community centers are available for rent with capacities from 25 to 150 people, and rental requests must be submitted at least 30 days and no more than 11 months ahead. Weekes Community Center's main hall, at 27182 Patrick Avenue, can be rented for private events from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
