Let them watch the greeting from a familiar adult's side. Offer a wave or photo later, and accept a no without drawing attention to it.
Set aside a clear greeting area and let guests know that joining is optional. Tell the character team the planned start time and any simple activity you hope to include.
Not for lightning protection. Arrange a substantial indoor backup and follow the venue's instructions and current weather guidance.
For a Leyden, Massachusetts, party, make the first interaction easy to decline: the character can greet the group while the birthday child stays close to a parent. Then offer a choice of a photo or a short shared activity. Assign an adult to watch the weather and keep the indoor plan ready. These are statewide planning checks, not verified Leyden venues or local policies; confirm the exact visit program, costs and availability with our team.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.

National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue.
