Watching from a comfortable distance is a valid choice. A wave or photo can come later if the child feels ready.
Invite a wave or one simple group response, and make both optional. Keep the main activity area open for children who prefer to watch.

In Lynn Township, Michigan, a low-key character visit can give children several ways to take part. Begin with a short greeting, leave room for quiet observation, and offer photos or a simple group response as optional choices. Before guests arrive, clear a comfortable gathering area and tell another adult how the schedule will flow. These are statewide planning checks and parent suggestions, not verified Lynn Township venues or policies. Ask us about the character theme and confirm possible program details, costs, and availability with our team.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
Official source (opens in a new tab)Choose an adult to monitor the forecast and decide when to move the group indoors. National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue. This does not establish local permits, shelter reservations or entertainer availability.
