Invite them to wave, join a brief activity or watch with an adult. Let the birthday child choose whether to stand beside the character.

In Milbank, a calm character visit starts with a simple plan for where children can gather and where the group can go if weather changes. Pick one adult to watch the forecast and make the move decision, so the organizer can focus on the birthday child. A gentle hello, optional group photo and a short activity can give children room to join at their own pace. Statewide and national guidance below offers planning checks, not verified Milbank venues or local policies.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
Official source (opens in a new tab)Choose an adult to monitor the forecast and decide when to move the group indoors. National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue. This does not establish local permits, shelter reservations or entertainer availability.
