That is a fine way to participate. Offer a wave or a place beside a trusted adult, with no pressure to approach.
Keep the greeting area clear, explain the optional group activity, and have an adult coordinate photos and transitions.
Check venue permission with the operator. Ask us to confirm the requested theme, program details, timing, cost and availability; asking is not booking.
In North Stonington, give the birthday child a little breathing room around the character visit. A familiar adult can introduce the character, leaving the child free to wave, watch, or join a short activity when ready. Invite guests to participate together, then make photos optional rather than a queue of individual turns. For an outdoor gathering, settle the backup plan before the party. Ask us to confirm the requested costume theme, program details, timing, cost and availability, and check activity permission with the venue separately.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
Connecticut State Parks and Forests provides an online booking route for the picnic shelters listed on its rental page. Use the specific listing to check capacity, season, facilities and reservation conditions. Ask the operator whether your proposed hired entertainer and equipment are permitted; a picnic shelter booking does not automatically approve those activities.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
