Offer the choice to watch, wave or join later. Keep a caregiver close and avoid making participation a requirement.
Invite children to choose a solo photo, a group photo or no photo. Keep the photo area clear so guests can approach at their own pace.
Ask the venue about booking, access and entertainment permissions. Ask the character team to confirm program details, costs and availability.
In West Richland, a simple sequence can help guests know what to expect: a brief hello, an optional group activity and time for photos. Keep the first interaction gentle, with a wave or watching as valid choices. If you are considering a picnic shelter or group space, check the state's reservation guidance and contact the actual operator; statewide information does not verify a city facility or its policies. Confirm setup permissions, then ask the character team about program details, costs and availability.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
Washington State Parks identifies reservation types that require its call center. Check the actual facility type and booking channel before trying to secure a picnic shelter or group space online. Verify access, setup and permission for hired entertainment separately with the operator; a reservation route is not event approval.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
