Offer a wave or watch-from-nearby option before inviting anyone closer. Let each child decide whether to join, and avoid making a photo or touch part of the greeting.
Tell guests when the character moment will happen, keep the greeting area uncluttered, and share the child's preferences and schedule with our team.
Not for lightning planning. Check the actual site's conditions and arrange an accessible substantial building as a backup for an outdoor gathering.
For York Harbor, plan the character's arrival around the child's comfort and the practical limits of your gathering space. A quiet wave or brief hello can come first, followed by an optional photo and a simple activity that guests can join without forming a crowd. Think through where children can wait and where the visit can pause if someone needs space. Check the site details before setting the schedule. Our team can confirm requested program details, costs, and availability; ideas are subject to confirmation.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
Maine's Bureau of Parks and Lands lists both sheltered and unsheltered group picnic areas and directs visitors to contact the park for reservations or information. Verify which type of area you are booking, its facilities and the operator's conditions for hired entertainment. An open shelter should not be treated as a substantial indoor weather backup.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
