For a character visit in Vilas, make the first few minutes flexible: the child may greet the guest, watch from a familiar adult, or join when ready. Keep a photo moment optional and give guests a simple cue for taking turns. Before an outdoor gathering, decide who will watch the forecast and guide a move indoors if needed. The advice below is statewide planning guidance, not verified information about Vilas facilities or local rules.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.

National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue. This does not establish local permits, shelter reservations or entertainer availability.
