Offer a wave or photo as choices, and let the child watch first if preferred. Keep a trusted adult close by.
Invite children to join one at a time or in small groups. A helper can keep the photo area clear and give everyone a turn.

In Princeton, Illinois, keep the character visit easy to navigate by setting aside one welcoming area for the greeting and photos. Let the birthday child choose a wave, a brief hello or a spot beside a familiar adult. Guests can take turns joining an activity rather than gathering around the child. Illinois provides a directory of state park picnic locations, but that is statewide guidance, not a verified Princeton venue or policy. Check the exact site directly, and plan an indoor weather backup. Ask us or our team about program ideas, costs and availability.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
Illinois DNR provides a directory of state park picnic locations. Use it to identify the exact state-managed property, then check its shelter booking process, facilities and access with the operator. A picnic listing is not a reservation or approval for hired entertainment, and it does not establish rules for municipal parks.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
