Let them stay beside a familiar adult and observe. Offer a wave or a photo later, without making either part of the visit mandatory.
Choose one adult to invite small groups forward for the activity or photos. Keep the character's greeting area clear for children who need space.
Ask about the requested character, program ideas, timing, cost and availability. A ZIP code or date request is not a reservation or payment.
A thoughtful Otisville, Michigan, character visit gives the child room to set the pace. Plan for a friendly wave, a short story or simple game, then a photo moment for guests who want to join. Tell the character team how the child prefers to be greeted and keep one adult free to support quieter guests. For an outdoor party, decide in advance who will monitor weather and where the group can move indoors if needed.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.

National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue. This does not establish local permits, shelter reservations or entertainer availability.
