Let the child watch first and choose whether to wave or approach. Stay nearby and treat a later greeting as an option, not a requirement.
Use one short group invitation, such as a wave, then offer photos only if the birthday child is comfortable.
Check the exact shelter, date, access and permission for hired entertainment with its operator. Confirm character-visit details with our team.
For a Ruby birthday, give the child time to notice the character before asking whether they want to say hello. They might wave from across the room, stay close to a parent or choose a photo later. Keep the planned visit simple, with a greeting and one optional activity for guests. If an outdoor shelter is part of your idea, verify the actual site, access and booking conditions rather than assuming every park follows one process. Ask us about your theme; our team must confirm program details, costs and availability.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
Alaska's Refuge Cove State Recreation Site publishes an online reservation route for its picnic shelter. Check the specific shelter, date and access conditions rather than assuming every state park works the same way. Ask the operator about permission for a hired character visit; the reservation route alone does not establish that permission.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
