Let the child watch from beside a trusted adult, wave, or join later. A greeting does not need to include a hug or conversation.
Choose a simple photo spot with clear space and good light. Ask a helper to gather children one or two at a time.

In Greenville, Rhode Island, plan the character visit around a calm welcome and a clear weather backup. A parent can introduce the guest, invite the birthday child to wave or say hello, then offer a photo together without pressure. Keep the visit area easy to reach and leave room for children to watch before joining. If you are gathering outdoors, these are statewide planning checks and parent suggestions, not verified Greenville venues or policies. Ask us about the character theme; confirm program details, costs and availability with our team.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
Official source (opens in a new tab)Choose an adult to monitor the forecast and decide when to move the group indoors. National Weather Service guidance calls for a designated weather monitor; confirm a practical route to the backup space with the venue. This does not establish local permits, shelter reservations or entertainer availability.
