Let children choose between a wave, a photo with a parent or watching from nearby. Avoid making participation a requirement.
Set aside a short photo moment and have one adult invite guests forward in small groups or one at a time.

A relaxed Blue Ridge, Virginia, character visit starts with a small plan for the birthday child's first hello. Give them the choice to wave from their seat or stand with a trusted adult. After a brief greeting, invite willing guests to join a photo, then let others watch. Verify the actual venue rather than assuming another Virginia city's facility rules apply. Ask us about the requested character theme, and confirm program details, costs and availability with our team.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
As a city-scoped example within Virginia, Alexandria municipal facilities provide different picnic-season and indoor rental options. Alexandria distinguishes its picnic season from year-round indoor rentals. For a party outside the picnic season, check an indoor reservation path and verify the actual opening hours of the chosen room. This example applies only to Alexandria's listed municipal facilities; other cities and state-managed parks have separate operators and rules. Confirm the exact venue's reservation process and permission for hired entertainment.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
