Each center has its own rules and availability, so ask the specific center whether outside entertainment is allowed and whether the room you want is open on your date.
A picnic shelter with grills can suit a casual daytime party, but ask the park what events it allows and have an indoor plan if the weather turns.
The gymnasium is an air-conditioned, official-size room used for sports, so it may suit a larger group. Check with the center about setup, seating and whether a performance can take place there.
Many parents pick the character first because it shapes the costume, activities and mood, then look for a venue that fits the guest count and the season.
Chesapeake is a city with a range of indoor and outdoor spaces, so the best place for a character party depends on the season, the guest count and what your venue allows. Start by picking the character and theme you want, then check the venue's own rules before you book.
Chesapeake's city community centers have a gymnasium, meeting rooms, a kitchen, a game room, a fitness room and locker rooms. The gymnasium is an official-size, air-conditioned room used for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. A parent might ask whether a center's meeting room or gym could host a character visit, and whether the room is available on the chosen date. Confirm directly with the center whether outside entertainment is permitted and how the room is set up.

Claire R. Askew Western Branch Park is a 93-acre park next to the Western Branch community center. It has multipurpose athletic fields, open spaces, two picnic shelters with grills, a restroom building and a tree trail. A picnic shelter can suit a daytime garden-style party, but an open pavilion is a space for picnics, not a lightning-safe building. If the forecast is uncertain, plan an indoor backup and ask the park or your venue how they handle changes in weather.

Ask whether the space is reserved for your party's full time, whether outside entertainers need permission, whether the room can be set up for a performance and whether you may bring props or decorations. Also ask about the number of guests the room can hold. Keep these questions on hand when you call, since rules differ by facility.
