Let the birthday child watch or wave from beside a trusted adult. Offer a closer hello only when the child seems ready.
Set out an optional group photo, then let guests choose whether to take an individual turn or simply watch.
Check venue conditions and any entertainment permission with the operator. Ask us to confirm the requested character, program, costs, and availability.
For a Wintergreen gathering, treat venue research as a separate step from choosing the character theme. The supplied facility example concerns Alexandria, not Wintergreen, so check the rules with the operator of your actual site. Once the space is settled, make the child's greeting low-pressure: begin with a wave, allow a pause, and offer photos only by choice. Guests can join a short group moment or watch comfortably. Ask us to confirm the requested character's program, costs, and availability.
Useful rules and places to check, each with its official source.
As a city-scoped example within Virginia, Alexandria municipal facilities provide different picnic-season and indoor rental options. Alexandria distinguishes its picnic season from year-round indoor rentals. For a party outside the picnic season, check an indoor reservation path and verify the actual opening hours of the chosen room. This example applies only to Alexandria's listed municipal facilities; other cities and state-managed parks have separate operators and rules. Confirm the exact venue's reservation process and permission for hired entertainment.
Official source (opens in a new tab)For any outdoor gathering, arrange an accessible indoor backup before the party. National Weather Service guidance identifies buildings with wiring and plumbing as stronger protection; an open picnic shelter is not a lightning backup. This is national planning guidance, not a local venue rule.
